**Let’s Talk About ‘Bits’ And ‘Bytes’ – The Basics Of Our Internet**

The **digital world** is complicated but it can be fun if we get to know them. We casually use ‘megs’ for both ‘bits’ and ‘bytes’, without knowing that there is a measurement difference between data sizes and internet speed.

Let’s elaborate on the term ‘megs’- the word is made to denote two completely different values. Meg refers to – megabits and megabytes. Now comes the question that confuses everyone- is there any difference between megabytes and megabits and if yes, then what?

The answer is No. These two are not the same units and they do not signify the same value. The Tech people will gladly inform everyone that MB and Mb have a huge difference. One is about digital files/information transmission, and the other is about storage.

**Bits And Bytes**

Bits: It stands for binary digits. Imagine that each piece of information we have on the internet has a value, then bits are the smallest ones. Now don’t imagine it because it’s real. Digital communication has values ( the thing that measures them) and a bit is used to represent the smallest unit of digital information. Bits are known as the roots of digital data as they store and denote information. Physically, one can write bits as 0 or 1 and even as true or false. They just have to be in two entirely different/opposite states. Bits are used to gauge storage capacities and data transfer.

Bytes: a collection of adjacent bits forms a byte. It is evident that bits are smaller than bytes. Even a single byte is much bigger than bits. To be exact, a byte is eight times bigger than a bit. Eight bits together make up a byte. A single byte can fix 8 bits in it. The size of the byte depends on the computer model and the reason for which it is used. Bytes represent information such as – numbers, characters, and other units of digital information. Byte is used to measure memory capacity, file sizes, and the rate of digital data transmission.

**Here Are The Values**

- Mb- These are eight megabits
- MB- represents every megabyte with 8 megabits in it.
- Gb- eight gigabits
- GB- represents every gigabyte with 8 gigabits in it.
- KB- kilobytes.

Now comes the other question- What’s the deal with capital B and lowercase b?

Whenever there are bytes we use capital B, which measures data sizes, and whenever there are bits we use lowercase b, which measures broadband speeds. Now, after knowing about all these values, and understanding connection and file size, one can calculate how long it will take them to download their files.

Kilobits- We talked about megabytes (MB) and megabits (Mb), There is one more which is kilobits (kb), all lowercase. The reason kilobits are not talked about much these days is because the file sizes of kb are extremely small compared to the other values. We rarely see such small-size files nowadays.

Simple math – values with capital B are larger than values with lowercase b.

**Golden Question- Which Value Is Bigger?**

Many ask this question – which is smaller kb or mb?

To answer this question one must be well aware of what kb and mb mean which we have talked about in the above section.

Kilobytes and megabytes are not the same. Let’s have a look at what each of the values denotes and the weight each carries.

One kilobyte (KB) is only 1/1024 of megabytes (MB).

It is clear from the above equation that kilobytes are smaller than megabytes. Kilobytes are the smaller measuring units of digital information. As mentioned earlier, kilobytes are particularly small-size files that are rare these days.

When you divide one megabyte into approximately 1/1024 then you will get one kilobyte.

Kilobytes are only useful when the data of file sizes, data transmission rates, and memory weight are too small. Megabytes are useful when the data of all these are comparatively larger.

Some examples- a general example of a kilobyte can be text messages. Messaging on almost every social media requires a minimal amount of data. Therefore, kilobytes measure the data consumed during text messages.

A general example of a megabyte would be sending and receiving large-size videos. This kind of transmission consumes several megabytes.

This is the major difference between megabytes and kilobytes. Everything depends on file size and data speed.

**So That Means KB Is The Smallest Among All The Other Values?**

We have already mentioned that bit ( with lowercase) is the smallest unit of data information and not a kilobyte. The bit that represents a binary digit is the smallest unit.

In simple words, KB that is kilobyte is larger than b and is bit. But a kilobyte is smaller than MB which is a megabyte.

**What About GB And MB?**

The simple equation – 1 GB (gigabyte) consists of 1024 MB (megabytes).

We can say that GB is larger and is for a large amount of data transmission, file storage, and digital information. Whereas megabytes is for comparatively smaller data.

**The Trio – Mb, Gb And Kb**

A gigabyte (GB) is the largest, then comes a megabyte (MB), and at last, there are kilobytes (KB).

The above equation comes from binary data. According to binary multiples, between each measuring unit there is a difference of 1024 units. That means the larger unit is 1024 times larger than its smaller unit.
