1. Don’t enforce your dreams on your child 

Your child is a unique individual. They are not you. They might like doing you absolutely loathe and vice versa. Avoid telling your child to avoid a certain path just because it is something that doesn’t interest you. 

2. Ensure you help your child discover his strengths and passions

Encourage your child to visit with a career counselor to take aptitude tests. It’s very beneficial to take a variety of assessments and look for patterns among the results. And let them discover their innate strengths and passion which will enable you to help them maximize these strengths. 

3. Help find a mentor for your child

Having a role model in the field of his choice can really prove beneficial for your child. Help your child find an inspiring mentor in the field of his choice. Having a great mentor can boost your child’s career aspirations.

4. Expose your child to a variety of activities to find their true calling

Give your child opportunities to try new activities. Expose them to nature, the arts, science, museums, animals, travel, people and pay attention to what piques their interest. Encourage them to learn more about the subject they show interest in.  

5. Encourage your child to choose the right company 

As a parent, it is important to build a good set of people around you. And you should encourage your child to find his own tribe. Challenging your child to get out of his comfort zone and get involved is the first step in this direction. Whether it’s sports, a service organization, a business club, or any of the many other possibilities, encourage your child to spend time with friends who inspire them. The company really matters and who your child chooses to hang out with can greatly his dreams, their beliefs, and the opportunities they seek.

6. Set a great example

It pays to work on being a great example of doing work you enjoy as your child watches your every move. When your child sees you working what you really love doing, they will know that it is possible for them to also find and do work they love. After all, you are never too old to spend more time doing what you love, so seek what lights you up and do more of what you love and less of the unimportant junk.

7. Be patient and encouraging

It will be helpful to remind your child that the quest to do work they love is often a long process of self-discovery and experimenting. There could be times when they may have to change course as they navigate their career path. Your being patient with your child during these difficult decisions will go a long way in setting the pace and course of their journey. It will encourage them to keep learning more about themselves so they can keep growing into the amazing person they are meant to be.
